Silverstream Landfill Heavy EV Charging Hub Opening

Mean, green, waste collection machines in Lower Hutt
Transporting New Zealand staff were pleased to attend the official opening of a heavy electric vehicle charging station at Silverstream Landfill on Tuesday 3 February, 2026. On display was a 100% electric Waste Management rubbish truck and a 20 tonne Volvo wheel loader. Mayor Ken Laban officially cut the ribbon at the ceremony attended by Hutt City councillors and other industry members.
The project was co-funded by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), whose CEO, Marcos Pelenur told the crowd that other large contractors who’ve electrified their front loaders are reportedly saving 70-80% on fuel costs. The new charging infrastructure means more capacity for electric trucks and machinery in the future.
