Mackays Crossing CVSC opens

The latest Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (CVSC) has just commenced operations at Mackays Crossing north of Wellington, marking the eighth of 12 planned centres.

Members of the Transporting New Zealand office attended the opening of the site on 25 August, along with NZTA staff and the Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Team.

Located just off the Mackays Crossing interchange on Transmission Gully, on what was the old SH1 (now SH59), the $13.3m facility has a weigh bridge to measure stationary trucks, eight outdoor inspection bays for truck and trailers, plus a covered inspection shed with pit and roller-brake machines for more detailed examinations. There is also ample turning space and parking to offload trailers.

As with all CVSCs, there are weigh-in-motion (WIM) scales located south and north of the site, with overhead electronic signs located roughly 500m ahead to direct drivers to pull into the CVSC. It is an offence for drivers to ignore the instruction on an electronic sign displaying their trucks number plate.

To access the centre, northbound traffic exits SH1 at the Mackays Crossing interchange and turns south onto SH59, with the CVSC located on the right. Southbound traffic exits SH1 at the Paekākāriki interchange and turns north onto SH59, with the CVSC located on the left.

NZTA estimate that around 11 heavy vehicles will be called into the CVSC during the morning peak (8-9am) and around 7 during the evening peak (5-6pm). Police CVST estimate inspection times will be about 15 minutes if everything is in order.
