Carden Shaft Park Brake Survey for NZTA

March 10, 2025

Purpose

To assist NZTA by seeking feedback from operator’s of vehicles with Carden Shaft Park Brakes (CSB).

Background

Following a series of fatalities involving vehicles fitted with a CSB, Worksafe and NZTA issued safety alerts highlighting the need for CSB’s to be properly serviced. There was also a communications campaign directed at owners of these vehicles to make sure drivers were aware of the limitations of the CSB when operating around the vehicle.

  • A warning label was required to be fitted in the cab of the vehicle to make drivers aware that a CSB was fitted.
  • Changes were also made to how the CSB was tested at CoF.

NZTA has additionally provided this information:  Cardan shaft park brakes | NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi

NZTA is carrying out a review of the various regulatory interventions and would like feedback from the sector to determine if any significant residual risk remains with vehicles fitted with a CSB.

Action

Members with vehicles with a CSB can assist by completing this survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MCXJBCF  by Thursday 20th March. The survey should take approximately 3 minutes.
