
Transporting New Zealand is supporting a proposed law change that would allow employers and workers to reach a mutual agreement to end employment without the need for a formal personal grievance process.
Presenting to Parliament’s Education and Workplace Committee, Dom Kalasih and Lindsay Calvi-Freeman said the Employment Relations (Termination of Employment by Agreement) Amendment Bill offers a more practical approach for managing difficult cases, particularly where repeated drug or alcohol impairment or serious safety breaches are putting the public at risk.
The proposal aims to reduce the emotional and financial toll of lengthy legal disputes, while ensuring outcomes that respect people’s dignity and uphold public safety.
CEO Dom Kalasih says Transporting New Zealand supports the bill “because it provides another tool in the toolbox, and it’s an opportunity to avoid unnecessary delays and expenses associated in working through the entire process, where ultimately the result is the same”.
