Wondering how young people can transition into training and employment in the transport industry? If you’re someone in this demographic, or you know someone who’s keen, MITO has the following tips for you.
1. Enrol in MITO’s Introduction to Commercial Road Transport Micro-credential
This free online course provides a solid foundation in the industry and takes around 20–25 hours to complete. You can study at your own pace and sit the timed assessment when you feel confident.
Completing this micro-credential demonstrates your enthusiasm and commitment to potential employers.
2. Prepare your Pitch and CV
Craft a strong 30-second pitch and update your CV. Identify the regions you’re keen to work in and approach transport companies directly.
When visiting, don’t ask for a job – express your interest in the industry and ask for advice on the best ways to enter it. Even if they don’t have a role, they might refer you to someone who does.
Transport companies will expect you to hold a Class 1 license. Employers value safe, clean driving records.
Focus on companies with warehousing operations. Starting in a warehouse role can be a great pathway to becoming a Class 5 driver, as many employers will support you through your Class 2, 4, and 5 licences and provide the necessary driving experience.
Removal companies and local courier companies are a good place to start for Class 2 drivers. You can then build on your driving skills and licences from there.
It’s a competitive space so be prepared for some knockbacks, but persistence pays off.
3. Monitor job listings on the MITO JobHub and on jobseeker sites
Keep an eye on employment websites for opportunities in the transport and logistics sector.
Once you have secured a job in the industry then you can enrol in the next MITO Commercial Road Transport micro-credentials and programmes, such as:
Commercial Road Transport Skills (Level 3)
Heavy Combination Vehicle Loading Fundamentals (Level 3)
Mass and Dimensions (Level 3)
Heavy Vehicle Operator (Level 3)
MITO supports people and businesses to thrive through on-the-job training. We connect learners, employers, and schools with the right tools, qualifications, and opportunities to succeed.
