Fuel is usually the single biggest variable cost for many New Zealand heavy vehicle operators, putting pressure on existing contractual relationships, and causing consumers to feel the pain in their wallets.

TR Driver Training and EECA are jointly bringing the knowledge to drive fuel costs down by offering subsidised in-cab coaching for heavy vehicle operators across New Zealand. This gives participants the opportunity to eke out a competitive advantage with projected savings from 3-12% of an overall fuel bill.

A TR trainer rides along in your vehicle, on your actual routes, during normal working hours. There’s no downtime or disruption to operations. The trainer provides coaching around speed management, braking, cornering, gear selection, hazard response, and how the driver uses in-cab technology, then corrects habits in real time, as they happen. Every driver receives a summary report with personalised recommendations at the end.

A 2-hour session is now just $260+GST (a saving of 50%). Half-day and full-day sessions are also available, each subsidised $260 +GST by EECA.

EECA’s mission is use fuel efficiently, and this initiative with TR Driver Training and TR Group is to help reduce unnecessary fuel use. “Operators reap multiple benefits from this type of training,” says Jenna Brown, General Manager of Driver Training “The driving habits that waste fuel such as harsh acceleration, late braking and poor anticipation are the same ones that cause incidents. Fix one and it often fixes the other.”

Operators interested in maximising fuel saving gains can combine in-cab coaching with Safe and Fuel-Efficient Driving (SAFED) training developed by the Ministry of Transport and NZTA. On average, SAFED produces a 7.37% fuel saving for truck drivers, with top performers hitting 10-12%.

EECA co-funding is available now. Simply contact TR Driver Training on 0800 637 000 or at drivertraining@trgroup.co.nz for more information and availability.
