Transport sector pathway to residence during critical skill shortage

After Covid, the road freight sector was experiencing a serious skills shortage. There just weren’t enough Class 4 and 5 drivers to get the freight task done. Transporting New Zealand reported a shortage of over 2,000 truck drivers nationwide, prompting the Government to bring in a Transport Work to Residence pathway in 2022. This one-off boost of skilled drivers proved successful in addressing some of the road freight industry’s critical workforce gaps.

Responding to the truck driver shortage
