Help Shape the Future of Container Handling Training

October 14, 2026 | Transporting New Zealand

The Ports and Intermodal Sector Group are currently developing a new Good Practice Guide (GPG) for Container Handling Machines, supported by a new industry skill standard pathway. The project aims to provide operators, employers, trainers, and health and safety professionals with clear guidance on the safe operation of containerhandling equipment such as reach stackers, empty container handlers, straddle carriers, forklifts operating in container environments, and other specialised containerhandling machines.

As part of this work, MITO and the Transport ISB are seeking feedback from industry to understand the likely uptake of the proposed skill standard and training pathway. This information will help determine the viability of the programme and ensure it meets the needs of the sector.

If your organisation operates container handling equipment, delivers training, or employs operators in ports, freight hubs, intermodal facilities, or container depots, we encourage you to complete the short survey below.

Your feedback will directly influence the future development of industry training and competency recognition for container handling machine operators.

You’ll be asked:

  1. Whether you operate Empty Container Handlers, Reach Stackers, Top Loaders, or Straddle Carriers
  2. How training and sign-off operates in your organisation
  3. If there was a formal NZQA, MITO and Worksafe endorsed standards pathway in place, would you include this in your training plan?
  4. How many operators would you look to initially enter to the qualification pathway?

Estimated completion time: 2-3 minutes.

Thank you for supporting this important industry initiative.
