Purpose

The purpose of this Advisory is to inform industry of the results of a survey the Road Transport Forum (RTF) undertook on vaccination rates in the industry. This is to inform work with the Ministry of Health to get essential workers vaccinated against Covid-19.

Survey results

A big thank you to all transport operators for their participation in our survey on vaccination levels in the industry. This was a very successful survey, well promoted and facilitated by our associations. The information collected was of a high quality and it shows the interest of transport operators in their staff wellbeing.

We will be using this information to engage with the Ministry of Health to inform their roll out of vaccinations to truck drivers as front-line essential workers.

Please see the key information we have taken from the survey below.

● Almost 500 transport operators completed the survey
● All regions of New Zealand were well represented
● 47% of those surveyed employ 1-5 truck drivers, and 28% employ over 21 drivers – so a good spread of the industry
● 72% of employers are aware of their staff’s vaccination status
● 65% indicated that most, or some of their drivers have not been vaccinated
● Only 8% of transport businesses surveyed have all their drivers fully vaccinated
● 82% of transport operators are unaware of anyone on their staff who has refused vaccination
● Over 90% of employers would be willing to assist a vaccination programme by allowing staff to be vaccinated during work hours
● 56% of operators deliver food, come into contact with food providers, or visit ports on a day-to-day basis
● 82% of operators have not yet been asked by their customers as to the vaccination status of their workforce

Conclusions

• Large parts of the industry are not vaccinated at all, or ‘under-vaccinated’
• Most transport businesses are aware their staff’s vaccination situation
• The vast majority are prepared to help facilitate a targeted vaccine rollout for the industry
